Buffalo >Bars & Clubs > Essex Pub
Quintessential Buffalo Dive.
I can't believe no one has reviewed the Essex!
The Crowd: There are a lot of the same faces night after night but is not a bar only for "regulars" - and regular is not a term I'd use to describe them... it tends to be a cross section of laid-back black-clad 20-somethings (male and female) and older male hardcore alcoholics. I've seen a few people get tossed out of the Essex (anyone remember Jack?) but have never seen a fight there.
The Scene: Small pool table in front (sign up on the chalkboard to get a turn) and dartboards in back, but the main purpose of most of the clientele is inebriation. Terrific jukebox with a much more eclectic mix that you'll find in most bars - I was especially pleased at the punk selections.
The Food: Only for the brave or the stoned.
I love the Essex - I closed the place countless times when I lived across the street and still return there everytime I'm back in Buffalo. You should learn to love this scrappy little gem.
