Tips for Amvets Thrift Store

August 13, 2012

I recently moved from Syracuse to Buffalo into a shared apartment. This place is great for appliances. I snagged a like new (with a little wash-down) toaster oven ($8), a Belgium waffle iron ($5), a circa 1960's popcorn maker ($3), a bread maker ($5), and USB mouse ($1), and some knick-knacky mugs ($1 each) for a some-odd grand total that didn't make it to $25 dollars. There has been a couple really nice modern cushy sofas for around 80-100 that I would have snagged up if I had some way to transport them.

On Tuesdays there is a 25% discount on clothes with student ID. Also there is a color tag sale everyday. Haven't scoped the clothes yet but I cruised through the jeans and there were some like-new ones for super cheap. Although I haven't found anything to compare to my brand new True Religion jeans I scored for $8 in Syracuse which I constantly debate putting on e-bay or to continue to enjoy the butt flattery they give to my rump.

I cannot say enough good things about this store. I shop at this amvets about once a week. Some things I like best about it are teacups and saucers. I find very fancy vintage ones here, that are perfect for entertaining! And so incredibly cheap! I also find random plates, bowls, serving platters. I go for ones with a vintage, or even victorian feel to them. People are always commenting on them in my home!

Lamps! I have bought a few lamps here, one was ceramic and beautifully detailed with tiny flowers. I'm sure it would have retailed for about seventy dollars. I got it for ten, lampshade included. Also a very, VERY old fashioned wrought metal lamp. It looks to me to be a genuine antique article. Probably would sell for one hundred at an antique store, I got it for eight dollars.

Clothes! I find many interesting and artsy looking dresses and tops here for myself. The childrens clothes are an incredible value. Jeans that have been barely worn can be bought for three dollars. Coats, dresses, of all styles can be found. I like to find sort of different looking outfits for my girls here, and they just love them! Then we look at the shoes and often find some fancy little shoes to go with their outfits, often for as low as 99 cents!

Frames! Picture frames can be expensive, depending where you shop. The ones here often have some type of picture in them, that is not to my liking. I open it, discard the picture and put a photo inside, or some homemade artwork. The more chintzy looking frames can be painted, and that's what I do. Buy a bunch all different types, then spray paint them all the same color, and make a collage on the wall with them.

These are but a few of the treasures you can find here, if you are patient enough to look, and it helps if you have a creative streak as well.
