Great food for the price – After reading reviews of this restaurants and had it recommended by friends and family, I took my sister who is attending UB for dinner. Saigon Bangkok was one of her favorite place in Buffalo, so our choices was narrowed down. This place was crowded, but we were seated promptly within 10 minutes. The host, Anna, was very nice to give us an opportunity to pick our table since there were 2 opened. The waitress we had knows the food that they serve as she answered most of the questions and offered suggestions.
My sister had the special that they had for the day, I can not think of it on top of my head at the moment, and I had the Seafood Pad Thai. We had an order of Summer and Spring Roll, and they were delicious. The Summer roll was new to me, since I am from Boston where they only offer shrimp and pork instead of Shrimp and Chicken. After trying the Shrimp and Chicken Summer roll, I think I'll try to have the Boston Vietnamese restaurants to try it.
For our entree, the Seafood Pad Thai was delicious. The seasoning/sauce was just right compares to places in Boston. The seafood was moist, unlike other places that had dry seafood. For desert, you should try the coconut ice cream with crispy bananas. I never had the crispy banana but am now a fan of it.
Lastly, the pricing was great. I see why this place is crowded during dinner, since the price and food is fantastic. Now I know why my sister loves this place, it's affordable for college students!! They are participating in restaurant week also, so go give them a try. Too bad I'm leaving Buffalo for Boston on Tuesday, or else I'll stay and try more dishes.
Worse Pad Thai – I love pad thai, but today I almost lost my taste for the dish I have loved for so long. I was being lasy and decided to go to saigon bangkok in stead of the place i regularly go(Jasmines) and I has the worst pad thai ever. It was dry, bland and the noodles were overcooked. To add insult to injury there were 2 poorly cleaned shrimp and an over abundance of bean sports that tasted like the were not washed. This was the first and last time I will order food from Saigon Bangkok.
Saigon-Bangkok Restaurant--it's gone downhill – I visited this restaurant when it first opened (based upon Janice Okun's rave review) and found that it was just superb.
A few days ago, my fiance and I visited there for lunch--what a huge disappointment! First, most of the tables had white, cotton tablecloths that weren't ironed--tons of wrinkles--there's nothing worse than sitting at a table with a greatly-wrinkled tablecloth. Wallpaper was peeling off of the southward facing wall.
As for the food, our green tea was sparse on green leaves--it was mostly hot water and tasted that way. Our lunches looked and tasted like they had come from the frozen food aisle of a supermarket. Seriously. The chicken was cut like the chicken in a TV dinner--ditto for the veggies. There is no way that a chef could have cut the veggies and chicken in such an assembly line, machine-cut fashion. The sauces were thick and gloppy--full of MSG and other preservatives, just like frozen food sauces.
I recognize these are tough times, but when I go out to eat, I expect something better than this!
saving grace – We just moved here from NYC and after attempting to dine in Buffalo for the past 5 months, I had sworn off eating out in "western ny" for good and had resorted to going to Toronto for good food. But last night my hero of a boyfriend suggested we try this place. This is hands down, THE BEST restaraunt in Buffalo. The food, service and ambiance is superior to any place we have tried so far, and we have been everywhere in the area. It is a simple, romantic restaraunt with subtle tai/vietnamese music, with out a lot of fuss, but everything is just right. The cuisine is authentic, they have good drinks and perfectly sized portions with great variety and tons of vegetarian options...Decide for yourself, but if you know fine dining you will see the true class and superiority of this understated hidden treasure.
Great FOOD and excellent atmosphere – I took my Co-worker from NYC to Saigon Bangkok when they were in Buffalo since they wanted to try something different. My companions rated Saigon Bangkok as one of the best Thai food they even had. Even in NYC, it would be hard press to find a place that has great food that is reasonably prices. I tried the Vietnamese pancake which was stuffed with pork and shrimp, It was very crispy on the outside and serve with light garlic sauce which was nice. My co worker tried the Cube steak and Dancing Seafood which was very tasty. The Seafood dish was on the spicy side so please is warn if you can't handle spices; this dish is probably not for you. The food was amazing and the service was great. Every bite we took was an explosion of taste with spices like lemon grass and basil. You can tell when you are a great place when you go on a Wednesday night and the whole restaurant is full of customer. Apparently I am not the only one to think that Saigon Bangkok is hidden gem in Western New York.
Worst Service – Although I used to patronize this place for the delicious food and the nice atmosphere, I think that both the owner and the employees have no respect for their customers. The worst episode of mine is when my friend found a fly in his pho. My friend found a fly floating on the soup when he finished the noodle. I talked to a waitress, but she took the bowl to the kitchen without saying anything. After quite a while, another waitress came back to us, deducted the charge for the pho from our bill brusquely, and asked us why we did not find the fly before finishing the dish in an accusing manner. My friend had to argue with her for apology for good ten minutes. Believe me, this is just an episode. I have had argued about wrong dishes with both the owner and the waitresses before. The people at Saigon Bangkok do not take responsibility when they make mistakes. And they do make mistakes.
Gourmet Food Takes Longer – I've been reading about service, and want to comment. Individually prepared gourmet meals take time to make. It isn't like McDonald's drive through. I find the food exceptional, the service friendly, and a staff who takes time to get to know their clients.
The food is authentic and delicious--I've been patronizing Saigon Bangkok for the past 8 years and have never been disappointed or had a bad meal.
Often, comments about service are fostered by unrealistic expectations.
I advise anyone who likes Thai and Vietnamese Cuisene to give this restaurant a try--you won't be disappointed.
So good that Asian emigres and Viet vets eat here – My favorite restaurant when I visit Buffalo, and of quality unparallelled in major US cities with large Asian populations... at 1/10th the price. Go at lunch to watch the staff in a corner of the dining room chop and prepare for the day's meals with a meticulousness that is rare and pleasing. Also, lunch is the same quality and quantity as dinner at 1/2 of the already-MOST reasonable prices. Last visit had an appetizer special of Thai potstickers that were indescribably delicate and flavorful. Soups range from lip-swelling hot to sinus-clearing to delicate and satisfying. Ask your fellow diners their favorites. You simply cannot miss here. Atmosphere is serene, service is most excellent.
great place for vietnamese and thai food – My wife and I was looking for a asian restaurant to have our aniversary because she is very fond of Thai and vietnamese food. We made reservation for friday night at Saigon bangkok restaurant. The service and atmosphere of the restaurant was perfect for our celebration. As for the food, we had the tamarind duck which we request for medium rare and it was cook to perfection. My wife had the lovely vietnamese pancake and a fresh summer rolls. Our overall experience was great and would recommended the restaurant to anyone looking for a good nite out with great food on their list.
Go for lunch! – I often go to Saigon Bangkok for lunch, and have never had the slow service that the other reviewers had at dinner. The lunch menu is a bit more limited, obviously, but the service is much more prompt. The green curry is excellent!
