Editorial Review for Schwabl's Restaurant – by Helen Russell
The Scene
Originally located in Buffalo's German district, Schwabl's West Seneca location has been its home since 1942, and the decor hasn't changed a bit. Oilcloth covers the small tables that cram the restaurant. Patrons waiting for a seat hang out at the narrow bar, tended by the current reining Schwabl, Ray.
The Food
The menu's prize dish is an old Buffalo delicacy: beef on weck. A rocksalt and seed-encrusted roll, kummelweck gets dipped in au jus and stuffed with thin slices of tender roast beef. A healthy dose of horseradish gives a pungent punch of additional flavor. The scrumptious warm German potato salad and crunchy coleslaw are perfect sides. Lightly breaded chicken tenders are a good choice for the kiddies. A daily fish fry, Hungarian goulash and other dishes round out the menu.

I love this place for the food, the atmosphere and the general feeling you get when you walk in the door. It's located in very small, old house - so quarters are tight. When you walk in, you'll see the bar to your right, complete with a very old cash register, brass rails (for your elbows and feet) and a polished wood bar that's seen thousands and thousands of patrons. Their male employees are wearing shirt and tie under butcher jackets (those white jackets that tie) and their female employees are dressed in white tops/skirts/shoes - kinda reminds me of a nurses outfit. They have one person up front carving (a huge) roast beef continually - in fact he finished one off and started another while we were dining. The beef was just like I like it - rare (they ask what temp you'd like it). I had the Beef on Weck with a side of slaw and german potato salad ($10). I'd HIGHLY recommend the potato salad. We got a couple of appetizers (fried cheese and aged cheddar plate) - they were 'eh' at best. I would skip these and save room for ice cream at Antoinette's on the Hill just a few blocks away. I think this place is a must when visiting Buffalo.
Pros: beef, atmosphere, prices
Cons: small - so if you're in a group of more than about 6-8, you will not be able to sit together
